Childcare development is part of the remit of the Early Years Team which is part of the Education Improvement Service. The Early Years Project Team provides support to new and established childcare settings in the borough with regards to meeting the safeguarding and welfare requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. This includes the provision of training, information, advice and guidance, support visits, financial help and business support where possible.

    What type of childcare would be best for my child? (EL-EY-0715-N001)

    You should consider carefully what type of childcare would be best for your child. Childminders can care for children of any age and offer the greatest flexibility.

    - Day Nurseries often care for children aged from a few months to 5 years and can provide care all day.

    - Pre-schools usually care for children aged 2 to 5 years on a sessional basis (morning or afternoon).  

    - Out of School Clubs (Breakfast, After-school and Holiday Playschemes) usually care for children aged 5 and up. Settings will have different levels of expertise, specialism and experience. You should contact the setting directly for more details.

    Where can I find information on free childcare? (EL-EY-0715-N002)

    Currently all 3 and 4 year olds are entitled to up to 15 hours free childcare per week for 38 weeks a year. This can be with a Childminder, Nursery or Pre-School. These hours are usually accessed during term time only but can be used as “stretched” offer where children access fewer hours a week for more weeks per year (throughout the school holidays).

    From September, children of working parents could be entitled to an additional 15 hours per week (Subject to eligibility). Some 2 year old are also entitled to free childcare for up to 15 hours a week, 38 weeks per year (subject to eligibility).

    Can childminders make referrals to other agencies (e.g. speech and language therapist) if they and the parents are concerned about a child’s development? (EL-EY-0715-N003)

    Yes, Childminders are able to make referrals to the speech and language therapists with the parents signed permission. The early year’s team in the local authority are also available to give advice and support to Childminders for individual children who attend. Please contact the Childminder who will contact the early year’s team on your behalf.

    How do I know if a childcare setting is good or not? (EL-EY-0715-N004)

    All Childcare in the London Borough of Bexley is registered with Ofsted. They are inspected regularly against the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and are given a judgement.
